Perhaps carbonized bamboo flooring should have been called “caramelized bamboo flooring” since long strips of the bamboo are actually boiled until the plant’s natural sugars are released—a process in cooking known as caramelizing. During this process the natural blond color of bamboo undergoes a change. Carbonized bamboo flooring is deeper and darker than other bamboo, ranging from light brown to mocha. The boiling process also makes the wood softer, about 30% softer than natural bamboo. But since bamboo is harder than hardwood, you don’t have to worry about your carbonized bamboo flooring not wearing well. Carbonized bamboo is harder than black walnut and less hard than red oak.
All bamboos are environmentally friendly because bamboo is a grass and it re-grows quickly just about anywhere. In fact, you can feel good about installing carbonized bamboo flooring in your home because you’re building with a sustainable material. Bamboo floors can go anywhere: upstairs, downstairs, even in your basement. They can even be installed over existing wood or vinyl floors. Best of all, there is no carbonized bamboo flooring that is priced better or looks and wears better than Yanchi bamboo flooring from BuildDirect.
