Yakima Rever Installation Suggestions

TOOLS REQUIRED

• Levels
• Hammer and drill
• Saws – Hand, table, circular, or miter

• 2-1/2" #8 Gauge Composite Deck Screws (STAINLESS STEEL, CERAMIC OR PROPRIETARY COATED FOR USE WITH TREATED WOOD JOISTS). Note: If you are using an ACQ treated sub-structure, this is very important because the chemicals can corrode other fasteners. Due to the hardness of Rever decking # 8 gauge screws are highly recommended over nails for ease of installation. If using the hidden clips use # 6 guage 1-1/2" screws.

SCREW DOWN INSTALLATION

1. The deck can be spanned to a maximum of 16", however if a diagonal design is done, then a maximum of 12" should be spanned. Yakima Composite Decking requires a minimum of 12” high, continuous airspace below joists as well as along three sides of the deck to allow for cross ventilation.
2. If you are using screws, the deck boards can be used as you would with regular lumber. Be sure to use two fasteners at every joist. The fasteners should be placed 1" from the sides and ends. As noted above, Yakima Rever decking is extremely hard and driving nails through it can be difficult. Using screws and drilling pilot holes where needed is recommended.
3. Length wise: if you are laying out boards end to end, the expansion and contraction of the length dimensions must be considered. We recommend a length to length gap of 3/16" –1/4" (5mm-6mm) for the boards. If the temperature from the time of installation to the maximum expected temperature is over 40°F, set the gap at ¼" (6mm).
4. For end to end installation you may need to add an extra 2x4 joist bracing block, depending on how the boards fit on the joist for fastening.
5. Steps should be installed on 12" centers. Use stringers when building steps. Stringers should have a rise of 6" to 7" with a 12" tread depth.
6. Slope of deck: Even with spacing of the boards, the deck should be sloped away from the house to avoid any water buildup against the house wall. A slope of 1" in 10’ would be sufficient.

INSTALLATION USING CLIP SYSTEM

The benefit of using the hidden deck clip is achieving a deck surface which is free of nail or screw heads. To install them, follow these steps:

• The number of clips used will depend on the size of deck and the joist spacing. Every board should have a clip at every joist. Therefore, to calculate how many will be needed please use the chart below.

• 50 pcs of 12 foot on 12" or 16" centers requires 3 pails of clips
• 50 pcs of 16 foot on 12" centers requires 4 pails of clips
• 50 pcs of 16 foot on 16" centers requires 3 pails of clips
• 102 pcs (a full lift) of 12 foot on 12" centers requires 6 pails of clips
• 102 pcs (a full lift) of 12 foot on 16" centers requires 5 pails of clips
• 102 pcs (a full lift) of 16 foot on 12" centers requires 7 pails of clips
• 102 pcs (a full lift) of 16 foot on 16" centers requires 6 pails of clips

USING THE CLIPS

1. If your boards run parallel to the house, install the first board from the house leaving about a 1/8" space. Ensure the boards are installed straight (A chalk line is recommended). If the boards are being installed perpendicular to the house a ¼" to 3/8" gap is recommended.
2. If you choose to use the stainless steel clips starting from your house, you will have a 5/8" gap
3. After the first board is installed tap the clips into the bottom lip of the board at every joist, with a mallet, hammer or a tapping block (Leaving the screw hole exposed). Drive the #6 gauge 1-1/2" screw into the screw hole. Use a slight angle to ensure the clip is secured tightly to the edge of the board. The screw must be driven into the screw slot so that the head is flush and not exposed. Slide the next board onto the clip using a rubber mallet or tapping block to ensure it is tight against the clip.
4. Continue sliding the next deck board into the clips and repeat the process until the deck is complete
5. Length wise: if you are laying out boards end to end, the expansion and contraction of the length dimensions must be considered. 6. For end to end installation you will need to add an extra joist bracing. Do not try to fit two boards onto one joist or one clip. Either use an extra joist or add a 2x4 block to an existing joist. To avoid the end to end appearance on the deck, an alternative to consider is putting a vertical deck board into the deck design

HOW TO MAKE A COST EFFECTIVE TRIM BOARD

Equipment and Materials Required:

• Skill saw or table Saw
• Long straight edge or second piece of Yakima Rever decking
• Composite decking material

1. Determine the width of trim board you desire and cut at position A as shown in the diagram below using the straight edge or second piece of decking as a guide.
2. Optionally, if you want symmetric straight edges on either end of the trimboard, cut the Yakima Rever decking (again using the straight edge or second piece of decking as a guide) as shown as shown at position B in the diagram below.
3. Secure the ends of the Yakima Rever Composite decking in a vice at both ends and make a cut across all interior legs of the Yakima Rever composite decking as shown at position C in the diagram below.
