At this stage, you�ve ordered and received your choice of ceramic tiles, having communicated with your sales rep as to which ones will be the most suitable for your install. Ceramic tile experts can tell you thatthe best way of getting the best results is to be prepared. A well thought out floor plan is of course essential. And a good knowledge base when approaching the vast selection that ceramic tile presents is also a key to success. But the basic step of making sure that the right tools are on hand can be a real time saver. And saving time will make your efforts in installing ceramic tile flooring even more rewarding!


Before you consider the best way to install ceramic tile flooring, here is a basic list of items you need to consider:


  • The right number of ceramic tiles - both full and trimmed � that match your floor plan for square footage

  • Tile Spacers

  • Setting material- thin set, mastic or adhesive

  • Sanded grout for grout joints over 1/8 inch.

  • Non-sanded or wall grout for joints

  • Tile adhesive or "mastic"


Additionally, you may wish to consider keeping the following tools on hand in order to make sure your efforts to install ceramic tile flooring will be as efficient as possible:


  • A level

  • Rags to keep grout and adhesives from sticking to the surface of your ceramic tiles

  • Several large sponges

  • Bucket (with warm water)

  • A notched trowel

  • Grout float

  • Rubber mallet

  • Hammer

  • Safety glasses

  • Knee pads for floor work

  • Tile cutter- these can be rented

  • A square

  • Tile nippers

  • Pliers

  • A tile saw or a tile scorer

  • Putty knife

  • Tape measure (or digital laser tape)

  • Chalk line
