Cedar Roofing: Rough or Smooth?
What you will learn: visual options and effects of cedar shingles and
cedar shakes; different cuts of cedar shakes and cedar shingles and their
definitions; guidelines on repairs and taking care while on your roof.
When deciding on any sort of building material, it’s always advantageous to have
different options to consider. With cedar roofing, there are two main
categories from which to choose: cedar shingles or cedar shakes.
The most obvious features that distinguish cedar shakes and cedar shingles from
each other are their unique visual characteristics. Because cedar shakes are
thicker and more rough hewn than cedar shingles, they are a great choice if the
kind of look you’re after leans toward the "rusticated" or perhaps "relaxed
urban."
Within the cedar shake category, there are another two options that will allow
you to hone your decision-making process: hand-split or taper-sawn cedar
shakes. Each shake is produced in a slightly different way providing different
visual results. The hand-split shake has somewhat rougher sides and may be said
to create a more rustic effect. The taper-sawn shake is sawn on both sides and
retains the thickness and strength of a shake while remaining closer to the
texture and tailored appearance of a shingle. Taper-sawing means the shake is
cut so it’s slightly thicker at one end, creating its "taper." A taper-sawn
shake therefore has a heavier shadow line, a visual effect many people like for
its "shaded" appearance.
There are also two options available within the cedar shingle category: sawn or
sanded cedar shingles. The sawn cedar shingle offers the strength and general
aesthetic properties of cedar shakes, but allows for the preference of a more
tailored appearance. The sanded cedar shingle is even smoother on both sides
and offers an even more refined look.
In either category, cedar shakes or cedar shingles are naturally suited to
withstand the rigors of specific climatic events such as a hailstorm or high
wind, as well as dependable roofing for the long term. With care, your cedar
roof can last a lifetime and longer.
Repairs
Should it become necessary to repair or replace any of your cedar shingles or
cedar shakes, or simply check the condition of your roofing, the safest bet is
to consult the professionals. Anytime you’re on a roof, there’s the possibility
of mishaps, particularly if you’re not used to walking on an uneven or sloping
surface. A professional roofer will be experienced in working high off the
ground in an area where you can more easily lose your footing. This is
something to keep in mind even when you’re cleaning your cedar roof – be
careful! If you are unsure of your abilities on a roof, it’s a good idea to
call an experienced roofing specialist.
Whatever your choice, cedar shakes or shingles will provide you with a
beautiful and long-lasting roof that you’ll be proud to have over your head.
