The Elements of Graphic Design: Space, Unity, Page Architecture, and Type
By Alexander W. White
(Watson-Guptill Publications 2002)
There are many approaches to graphic design, but Alexander White's is as creative as it is useful:
which is to say, immensely. The basis of White's approach is to think about the utility of "negative
space" when designing a printed page. Showing his understanding of modern media, he points out:
"The best use of a page's empty space is to help make information scannable, not merely to make
the pages pretty." The book is abundantly illustrated with cogent examples, and will intrigue
both novice and experienced designers.
