I wish I was handy.
It’s a common battle-cry of mine, since even the simplest things related to home improvement don’t come naturally to me. But what I do find easy is to admire those people who take their home improvement destinies into their own hands.
This isn’t just about being handy, either. It’s also about being creative when it comes to searching for the best deals, negotiating fairly and firmly with contractors, and making the decisions as to what you’re going to farm out, and what you know you’re able to accomplish by yourself. When it comes to creating an environment that you’re going to be happiest in, I think these latter skills are as important as skills with tools and tape measures.
Take a read of this article from The News Tribune based in Washington state about a DIY duo who have leveraged these skills to create their dream home at a lower cost than many would think. Among all of the skills they’ve demonstrated, perhaps the most impressive is that they were able to transform the interior as well as the exterior of their home, while taking care of an 18-month-old daughter. Perhaps I don’t know much about making vast home improvement projects a reality. But, I do know about parenting while keeping a household on an even keel at the same time. As such, reaping the benefits of hard work are even more well-earned!
