It seems that green building encouragingly represents something of a 21st century paradigm, with the symbols of our current decade, and century, being the forerunners in green building on an international level.  One biggie right on our doorstep here at BuildDirect is VANOC’s Richmond Olympic Oval.

Richmond is right down the road from our offices.  And the Olympics coming here next year has meant a raised profile for this part of the world.  With the controversy which often surrounds the host city of the Olympics, it seems that at least something of a social conscience has been worked into the mix as far as new facilities are concerned.

This article about LEED-certified sports arenas talks a bit about our local green building example, and other examples as well.

The Olympic Oval in Richmond BC is currently at silver certification, with ambitions to get a gold certification.  You can read more about how sustainability has been made a priority here, with replanting of trees, rainwater collection (we’ve got a lot of that around here!), use of pine-beetle wood, and other more efficient uses of resources.
