Any kitchen that gets significant use probably has quite the selection of spices hanging around. But keeping spices organized can be a pain if you don’t have a designated space for it, and they can get mixed up and go stale before you can use them up. Consider your kitchen space, then choose one or more of these tips for organizing your spices in one easy-to-reach place.
A long strip of magnet and special magnetized containers make it easy to add a wall mounted spice rack to your kitchen without having to do any significant remodeling. The magnetic strip is also great for knives and other metal accessories you might need within reach.
Shelving is also a functional way to organize spices. Install small, narrow shelves on your drywall to hold spice jars. Many hardware and home improvement stores have shelves meant for storing spices, and you can install them near your counter space so your spices are always within reach.
If you’re willing to do a bit of a remodel, you can always carve out a nook in your drywall specifically for your spices. Leave the shallow space open for a pretty display, or put a small door over it if you want a clean, traditional look.
Drawers and cabinets
A shallow drawer may be the perfect place to store your spices. Get an insert that divides the drawer up into small compartments, then put each spice jar into its own compartment. Organize by date of expiration or alphabetically to keep things tidy.
Some kitchens come with narrow pull-out cabinets specifically made for housing spices. If your kitchen already has one, use it! If not, consider adding one in during a small remodel.
You can always install spice racks on the walls. Depending on the size of your unused wall space, you may need a single long one or multiple short ones to install one on top of the other.
Put your spice rack on the inside of a cabinet door. Make sure your spices fit snugly if you go for this option because you wouldn’t want them rattling around or falling over every time you need to get into your cabinet.
Hang a spice rack in the pantry or on the inside of the pantry door. You’ll probably have more space to work with, so this is a great option for a kitchen with a lot of different spices to organize.
Another way to organize your spices is to keep them all in uniform containers that you can label. Get some small glass or metal jars with lids that you can write on, and then write the name of the spice and date of expiration. That way, you can easily see what you have and when it goes bad, which keeps everything fresh and neat!
