Frequently Asked Questions

What is waterproof engineered hardwood flooring?
Waterproof engineered hardwood is a type of engineered hardwood built with a moisture-resistant or waterproof core, typically made from SPC (stone plastic composite) or a specially treated composite, topped with a genuine hardwood veneer. It combines the natural look and feel of real wood with the waterproof performance of LVP, making it suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and other spaces where standard hardwood would not hold up.
How is waterproof engineered hardwood different from regular engineered hardwood?
Standard engineered hardwood is more moisture-resistant than solid hardwood due to its layered plywood core, but it is not fully waterproof. Waterproof engineered hardwood uses a core material engineered specifically to resist moisture penetration -- meaning standing water on the surface will not damage the plank itself. It can be installed in areas where regular engineered hardwood would be at risk, including bathrooms, mudrooms, and basements.
Can waterproof engineered hardwood be installed in bathrooms?
Yes. Waterproof engineered hardwood is one of the few real-wood flooring options suitable for bathroom installation. The waterproof core means the planks themselves will not swell or warp from water exposure. However, proper installation is still important -- maintain expansion gaps, seal transitions carefully, and do not allow standing water to sit in seams for extended periods. The subfloor beneath the floor should also be assessed for moisture before installation.
Does waterproof engineered hardwood look like real wood?
Yes. The top layer is genuine hardwood veneer, so it has the authentic grain, texture, and warmth of real wood. It is not a printed or photographic layer like LVP. The difference in appearance between waterproof engineered hardwood and standard engineered hardwood is negligible -- the waterproofing is in the core, not the surface.
Can waterproof engineered hardwood be refinished?
It depends on the thickness of the hardwood veneer on top. Products with a veneer of 2mm or more can typically be lightly sanded and refinished once or twice. Thinner veneers may not allow for full refinishing but can often be screened and recoated to restore the finish without removing material. Check the product specifications for veneer thickness if refinishability is important to your decision.
Is waterproof engineered hardwood a good choice for basements?
Yes. Waterproof engineered hardwood is well-suited for below-grade installations where moisture and humidity are common concerns. Its waterproof core resists the conditions that would damage standard hardwood or even regular engineered hardwood over time. Pair it with a moisture-barrier underlayment over concrete and ensure the subfloor is clean and flat before installation for best results.
