Frequently Asked Questions

What are floor moldings and why do I need them?
Floor moldings are finishing pieces that cover the gaps, transitions, and edges left when flooring is installed. They serve a functional purpose -- protecting expansion gaps and covering raw edges -- and a visual one, providing a clean, finished look throughout your home. Without moldings, flooring installations look unfinished and exposed edges are vulnerable to damage. They are a small part of the overall project cost but have a big impact on the final appearance.
What are the different types of floor moldings?
The most common types are transition strips, which bridge two different flooring surfaces at the same height; T-moldings, which connect two floors of equal height in a doorway; reducers, which transition between a higher floor and a lower one; end caps and stair nosings, which finish exposed edges at stair landings and room perimeters; and quarter round or shoe molding, which covers the gap between the flooring and the baseboard. Each serves a specific purpose and the right choice depends on your specific transition situation.
Do floor moldings need to match my flooring exactly?
Ideally, yes -- matching or coordinating moldings create the most seamless finished look. Many flooring manufacturers offer coordinating moldings designed to match their specific products in color and finish. If an exact match is not available, choose a molding that coordinates with the floor tone rather than contrasting sharply with it. Matching the finish (matte, satin, gloss) matters as much as matching the color.
Where do I need transition strips in my home?
Transition strips are needed anywhere two different flooring materials meet, in any doorway where flooring continues from one room to another, and at any point where a floating floor needs an expansion break in a large open area. Building codes and manufacturer warranties often require expansion gaps around the perimeter of a room -- transitions and moldings cover those gaps while allowing the floor to move naturally with temperature and humidity changes.
Are floor moldings difficult to install?
Most floor moldings are straightforward to install and are a realistic DIY project. T-moldings and reducers typically snap into a track that is nailed or glued to the subfloor. Quarter round and shoe molding are nailed to the baseboard, not the floor itself, which is important for floating floors that need to move. Stair nosings require more precision but are still manageable for a careful DIYer. The key is using the right fastener for each molding type and the subfloor material you are working with.
