My dad spent most of his life working as a piece-rate mechanic. Every day, he would drive to a dealership, go to his assigned stall, and wait for the service manager to assign him work. Every job had a set price — a number the service manager had negotiated with the customer. The “game” was simple: the faster my dad completed the job, the more he made per hour. If he finished quickly, the customer was happy, and he got paid better. But if the job took longer than expected, his effective hourly rate dropped fast. Too many days offered low or no pay.

What made it even tougher was that he had to buy all his own tools. It wasn’t uncommon for him to buy a $100 specialty wrench for a job that only paid $45. Over the years, he built up an enormous tool chest — his livelihood packed into drawers of sockets, wrenches, and gadgets most people wouldn’t recognize. Today, that same tool chest sits in his garage. He jokes about which one of us kids will inherit it, but none of us really know what to do with it. To him, those tools weren’t just equipment — they were his craft, his identity.

On weekends, our house was a makeshift garage. Friends and family would bring their cars over, and my dad would fix them — usually for free or just the cost of parts. Despite all his skill, he was never able to open his own mechanic shop. There were too many hurdles. In California, the licensing and regulatory barriers felt like they were designed to keep people from starting businesses. Beyond that, he didn’t have a building where customers could leave their vehicles, fully insured. And occasionally, he’d need access to expensive diagnostic equipment that only a dealership could provide.

When I look at the flooring industry today, it’s not much different. Installers who want to start their own flooring business face the same uphill battle. To get accounts with manufacturers, they’re expected to have a showroom, business bank accounts, certifications — all of which require significant upfront investment. It forces many of them into debt before they can even open their doors.

Through our Pro Centers, installers don’t need to go into debt or lease a building just to get started. They can meet customers at our locations, access product at wholesale prices, and offer their clients a fair deal without all the overhead. We help them with the business side too — from handling difficult customer issues to providing mentorship, marketing support, and everything in between. It’s a model designed to let them focus on what they do best: delivering quality work.

I couldn’t create a program like this for my dad back then. He retired from a tough, piece-rate career without ever getting the upside from the customers he personally brought into the dealership. He wasn’t paid for referrals, even though a portion of the shop’s business came from his reputation. That has always felt wrong to me.

But with BuildDirect Pros, we’re giving thousands of skilled tradespeople across the country a platform to build their own business, serve their own customers, and finally get rewarded for their craftsmanship and relationships.
