How it works

How the Floor Finder Picks Your Floor

The Floor Finder is a short questionnaire that turns what you tell us about your room into a shortlist of specific BuildDirect floors. It is free, it runs in your browser, and there is nothing to download.

Choosing flooring is really four decisions stacked on top of each other, and most people only have a confident answer to one of them. The questionnaire works through them in order:

  • The room. A basement, a bathroom and a second-floor bedroom rule different materials in and out before anything else is considered — moisture and grade level do most of the filtering.
  • How it gets used. Dogs, kids, rolling chairs and wet boots are what wear a floor out. This is what decides how much wear layer, or what AC rating, you actually need to buy.
  • The look. Species, plank width, colour and gloss — the part most people start with, and the part that matters least to whether the floor survives.
  • What you want to spend. Applied last, so it narrows a list of floors that already work rather than choosing the floor for you.

What comes back is a list of named products with their specifications, not a category page. From there you can order five free samples and see the shortlist on your own floor, in your own light, before you commit to a whole room.

The Floor Finder recommends a new floor. It cannot identify a floor you already own. If you are trying to match existing flooring — for a repair, an extension or a room you are carrying through — a photo and a measurement sent to a flooring expert will get you further than this questionnaire.

Other ways in

If the Questionnaire Isn't What You Need

The Floor Finder suits someone who knows the room but not the floor. Three other starting points, depending on where you actually are:

  • You already know the material

If you have settled on vinyl, laminate or hardwood, the questionnaire is a detour. Go straight to the range and filter it down yourself.

  • You want to see it before you decide

Screens misrepresent colour, and no photograph shows texture. Five samples are free and arrive second-day air — most people order them before choosing anything.

  • You're matching a floor you already have

The Floor Finder recommends new floors; it does not identify existing ones. A flooring expert can work from a photo and a measurement, which is the faster route here.

Questions

Floor Finder Questions

How long does the Floor Finder take?

It is a short questionnaire — a handful of questions about your room, how it gets used and the look you want. You can go back and change an answer at any point, and nothing is saved against your name unless you choose to give us your details at the end.

Is the Floor Finder free?

Yes. It is free, there is nothing to install, and you are not required to buy anything. The five samples it points you to are free as well, and they ship second-day air at no cost.

What do I get at the end?

A shortlist of specific BuildDirect floors, with their specifications, not a category to go and browse. Each one is a real product you can order samples of or buy outright the same day.

Can it tell me what flooring I already have?

No. The Floor Finder recommends a new floor; it cannot identify one you already own. If you are trying to match existing flooring for a repair or an extension, send a photo and a plank measurement to a flooring expert instead — that is a job for a person, not a questionnaire.

Are the floors it recommends actually in stock?

The Floor Finder recommends from the BuildDirect catalogue, so every match is a product page you can open. Availability and lead time are shown on the product page itself, which is the number to trust — some ranges are made to order and some are stocked.

What if I don't like any of the matches?

Change an answer and run it again — the look questions are the ones worth revisiting first. If that still doesn't land it, a flooring expert can work through it with you, and there is no charge for that.
