Where do I need transition strips in my home?
Transition strips are needed anywhere two different flooring materials meet, in any doorway where flooring continues from one room to another, and at any point where a floating floor needs an expansion break in a large open area. Building codes and manufacturer warranties often require expansion gaps around the perimeter of a room -- transitions and moldings cover those gaps while allowing the floor to move naturally with temperature and humidity changes.
Are floor moldings difficult to install?
Most floor moldings are straightforward to install and are a realistic DIY project. T-moldings and reducers typically snap into a track that is nailed or glued to the subfloor. Quarter round and shoe molding are nailed to the baseboard, not the floor itself, which is important for floating floors that need to move. Stair nosings require more precision but are still manageable for a careful DIYer. The key is using the right fastener for each molding type and the subfloor material you are working with.
