Waterproof Rigid Core Vinyl Flooring

Rigid core vinyl flooring is a type of luxury vinyl plank built with a stiff inner core, typically made from stone plastic composite (SPC) or wood plastic composite (WPC). Unlike flexible vinyl, the rigid core does not bend, which means it bridges minor subfloor imperfections and resists denting under heavy furniture or foot traffic. It is 100% waterproof and click-locks together for a floating installation that does not require glue or nails.

SPC (stone plastic composite) has a denser, harder core that is more dimensionally stable and better suited to commercial use or rooms with significant temperature swings. WPC (wood plastic composite) has a slightly softer, more cushioned feel underfoot and is a popular choice for residential spaces. Both are 100% waterproof. SPC is thinner and harder; WPC is thicker and warmer underfoot. For most residential living spaces, WPC is a comfortable everyday choice. For basements, kitchens, and commercial environments, SPC is typically the stronger option.

Yes. Rigid core LVP is one of the best flooring options for basements. Its 100% waterproof construction handles the moisture and humidity common in below-grade spaces, and the rigid core bridges minor concrete subfloor irregularities better than softer flooring types. For concrete subfloors, a moisture-barrier underlayment is still recommended even with a waterproof floor -- it protects the locking joints and the subfloor itself from moisture migration.

Total thickness for rigid core LVP typically ranges from 4mm to 8mm or more. Thicker planks tend to feel more solid underfoot and do a better job of hiding minor subfloor imperfections. For most residential installations, 6mm to 8mm with a 12 mil wear layer is a solid all-purpose spec. The wear layer thickness matters more for durability than total plank thickness -- do not trade wear layer for extra core thickness when comparing two products.

Many rigid core LVP products come with underlayment pre-attached to the back of each plank. If yours does not, a thin underlayment adds sound absorption and a small thermal benefit. Do not stack additional underlayment on top of a product that already has it -- the extra give can compromise the locking joint over time. Check the product spec sheet before adding any underlayment, and verify what the manufacturer recommends or requires to maintain the warranty.

In most cases, yes. Rigid core LVP can float over existing hard surfaces including tile, hardwood, and concrete as long as the surface is clean, flat, and structurally sound. The subfloor should not have more than 3/16 inch variation over a 10-foot span. High spots should be ground down and low spots filled before installation. It should not be installed over carpet or soft surfaces. Always check the manufacturer guidelines for the specific product you are installing.
