    In 2017, we bought appx. 500 sq. ft. of SOLID--not engineered--walnut flooring from BuildDirect. I LOVE it. It's beautiful and has all the warmth and charm you'd expect from solid hardwood floors. Makes a new build look like it has some history, but without the phoniness of "distressing."\n\nFast forward to August 2024. BuildDirect no longer offers the solid option, only an engineered option--for the same price as the solid was seven years ago. \n\nSo, I ordered a sample, curious as to the quality, as we might have a project on the horizon, and I wanted to see what a reliable source in the past was offering.\n\nThe opinion? Meh, it's OK. I could see using it in a room like a basement, where I don't need or want to show it off. But it's kind of fake looking, almost like a laminate. I have a room I bought an engineered floor for from Menards which looks more "real." \n\nThat doesn't make it bad, mind you, but the "wood grain" looks like a photo and not like actual wood. It IS pretty, but just fake. If you're cool with that, you'd be happy with the product. If I hadn't bought the solid wood years ago, I'd put it in the "I'll consider it" pile. \n\nIt's not a bad product though, as engineered floors go. It's just not as good as they used to sell for walnut. I'm a bit disappointed that it's not the same quality of product they sold seven years ago; it's not like I was expecting something the same as from like 25 years ago. Times change.\n\nIt does seem durable, AND, unlike the solid flooring I got years ago, it is a wide plank, so if I had to give it any pluses, it is pretty, as mentioned earlier, and the width is awesome.
